We the People

When America鈥檚 Founding Fathers first wrote 鈥淲e the people鈥, they did not mean slaves, who were barely considered people. Nor women, or people without property: neither could vote. Instead, 鈥淲e the people鈥 referred to approximately 15% of the population. As societal values have evolved, however, the identity of the American people has shifted, and We the People explores this fluidity, suggesting that colonialism has created the legacy of an inherently unstable 鈥 and ultimately, self-destructive 鈥 American identity.
