Art Deco Eritrean Restaurant

By Nicola Deen

My restaurant design was inspired by the Art Deco architecture in Eritrea’s capital, Asmara. A small East-African country with a fascinating history impacted by colonialism and a struggle for independence, Eritrea, especially Asmara, has a unique Italian identity with many well-preserved, beautiful Art Deco buildings. One of my objectives was to ensure ease of movement and convenience for staff. The key elements supporting this goal are the staff staircases for staff to transport food upstairs fast and a centralised kitchen system, where everything is in close proximity.
