This unit critically explores the role of context in shaping occupational participation for individuals and communities. Drawing on principles from occupational science students will analyse how environmental, social, cultural, political, and institutional factors influence participation. As the unit progresses, this foundational knowledge is applied to communities of people whose occupational possibilities are shaped by the meso and macro context. Emphasis is placed on understanding how personal identity, values, beliefs, and assumptions impact the development of respectful and effective collaborative relationships in occupational therapy practice. The unit promotes reflective and culturally responsive practice, preparing students to deliver inclusive, person-centred care that is informed by both occupational therapy and occupational science theory.

Learning outcomes

On the successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Analyse how context influences occupational participation for individuals and communities;
2. Evaluate how individual identity, beliefs and assumptions impacts collaborative relationships with individuals and communities;
3. Critically apply the occupational therapy process to address context factors which impact occupational participation; and

4. Reflect on how personal identity, beliefs, and assumptions influence collaborative relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and use this knowledge to develop cultural responsive practice.
