Coursework component of the PhD
PhD students complete coursework totalling 12 credit points, while Master of Research (MRes) students complete 9 credit points of coursework.
These coursework units are designed to equip emerging researchers with the practical knowledge and skills required to successfully navigate postgraduate research.
There are two categories of coursework units:
- Required units – typically completed in a student's first semester. These units are mandatory, and credit cannot be granted unless the student has previously achieved confirmation in the same degree (for example, having already been confirmed in an equivalent MRes or PhD).
- Restricted choice units – aligned with your Faculty or area of research. If no suitable restricted choice units are available, or if you have been assessed as having substantial research methods experience, you may apply to enrol in a thesis elective unit (subject to approval).
